Shyness is a common condition that is experienced by many people at some point during their lives. Even the most confident of people, including well known celebrities, have experienced shyness at least once. Learning how to overcome shyness is the key to enjoying life and all its opportunities.

Shyness can range from mild discomfort interacting with strangers, to complete isolation and social phobia. In its extreme form, anxiety, depression and panic attacks can result. Even mild shyness can prevent a person from progressing at work, enjoying a wide and varied social life, making new friends and finding an ideal romantic partner.

So what can be done to overcome shyness?

The first and most important point is to take action! Shy people must face up to their fears and take action to overcome shyness. This will seem very daunting and uncomfortable at first but knowing how to overcome shyness will involve breaking out of the comfort zone. However, the more a shy person experiences this discomfort the easier it becomes and the closer they will move towards their goal.

  • Begin by concentrating on body language. Most human communication is non verbal. Make sure you appear friendly and approachable by projecting a confident image. Stand tall and relaxed. Avoid slouching or constantly looking at the ground.
  • Observe other peoples body language. Look for open non verbal signals. In time, and with practise, these are the people you should aim to start a conversation with at a social gathering.
  • Smile and make eye contact. People who avoid eye contact often appear nervous or "shifty". However, avoid staring at all costs. Simply maintain eye contact with a smile for a few seconds and then look away before making eye contact again.
  • Try to interact with someone new everyday at every opportunity. Just smile, make eye contact and say a friendly "hi". If you do this everyday as you go about your daily business you will find it gets easier and easier as your confidence grows.

So, make it your goal to start taking action today and facing your fears. Discovering how to overcome shyness is a step by step process but in time your confidence and self esteem will grow. The longer you leave it the more wasted and missed opportunities will pass you by.
